about

*Sometimes we find ourselves hidden behind walls of our own making. I once knew someone who was always going on and on about traveling west and one day I remember saying “you might as well already be there” because her preoccupation with leaving and made it nearly impossible for her to enjoy the moment. I suppose we are all guilty of that at one point or another.)

March.2016:

Of all the songs that would wind up comprising this album, 'You Begin...' is easily the one that I spent the least amount of time actually thinking about or laboring over.

Like a divine gift, this song fell into my lap one morning as I was driving, the melody (that popped into my head) was so infectious that I forced myself to sing it over and over again until I finally arrived home and had a chance to record it. A couple of days later I fleshed out the progression, and quickly recorded everything durning an unusually productve afternoon the following week.

And perhaps it is because of that stated 'ease' with which this all came together that I initially discarded the track and spent the past few months not even sure if it belonged on the record, or let alone as the first single. (I suppose that sometimes the absense of a struggle can erode our ability to percieve with confidence.)

But eventually I saw the light, and thank God that I did, becuase I now consider this to be one of the best moments on the record. It's funny how an unaltered, unedited 'afterthought' can sometimes say that much more.

lyrics

She set her sights, and west she just might
She said “I tried and I tried and I tried”
But you might as well be
As far away from me
And so it’s twelve twenty three
Staring back at me, again

You begin where I end
You’ve always been my only friend
My whole life, I can’t defend
Now I begin where you end
And everything I should have said, I will

He set his sights, and west he just might
he said “I tried and I tried and I tried”
But you might as well be
An ocean away from me
And so it’s twelve twenty three
Staring back at me, again

And I could count the stars above
Embrace the ocean in the sky
And maybe even learn to fall in love
But it wouldn’t be the same without you

You begin where I end
You’ve always been my only friend
My whole life, I can’t defend
Now I begin where you end
And everything I should have said, I will
